Hopeful couple in a bright, welcoming San Diego home considering IUI

Services / Fertility & IVF

Intrauterine insemination (IUI).

Often a first step on the fertility journey — simple, low-cost, and a welcoming option for many families, including LGBTQ+ parents and single parents by choice.

What it is

IUI places prepared, concentrated sperm directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation, shortening the distance to the egg and improving the odds of fertilization. It's less invasive and less expensive than IVF.

Who it's for

  • Couples with mild male-factor or unexplained infertility
  • Individuals using donor sperm
  • Same-sex female couples
  • Single parents by choice

What to expect

  1. 1

    Cycle timing

Ovulation is tracked, sometimes with medication support.

  2. 2

    Sperm preparation

The sample (partner or donor) is washed and concentrated.

  3. 3

    Insemination

A quick, typically painless in-office procedure.

  4. 4

    Pregnancy test

    About two weeks later.

Why Dr. Brody

Steven A. Brody, MD, PhD trained across four medical specialties and co-authored the definitive IVF textbook with Nobel laureate Robert G. Edwards — the scientist who invented IVF. His diagnostic-first approach means he looks for the real cause, not a one-size-fits-all protocol. He'll make sure IUI is the right starting point for you — and move efficiently to IVF if it's the stronger path.
